New standards for pool safety barriers have arrived
November 12, 2024
Here’s everything you need to know
At D&D Technologies, we've been committed to pool safety for over 35 years. As the inventors of the MagnaLatch®, the number 1 safety latch for pool safety, and active participants in drowning prevention campaigns and organisations here in Australia as well as the USA, we know the critical role that pool safety barriers play in protecting young children.
With the recent release of the updated Australian Standard for swimming pool safety barriers, AS 1926.1:2024, it's essential that fencing professionals and pool owners are aware of the key changes. Let's break down the important updates and how D&D products can help you meet these new requirements.
Key changes in AS 1926.1:2024
The 2024 revision of AS 1926.1 aims to clarify ambiguities and address modern pool safety practices. Here are some of the most significant changes:
-
Clearer definitions and diagrams: The updated standard includes improved diagrams and definitions to ensure proper understanding and implementation of safety barriers.
-
Non-climbable zones: Detailed guidance is provided on the positioning of objects and plants within non-climbable zones to maintain the effectiveness of pool barriers.
-
Gate components: If you’re a fencing professional, this is where the most significant changes impact your work. The updated standard includes new requirements for gate latches and hinges, focusing on long-term reliability and effectiveness.
AS 1926.1:2024 impact on gate latches and hinges
Here's a closer look at the specific changes related to gate hardware:
-
Latch height: The new standard specifies that latches, such as the MagnaLatch®, must be installed not only 1500mm from ground level but also 1400mm above any lower foothold. This ensures that young children cannot reach the latch release, even if there's a climbable object nearby.
-
Permanent marking of components: Each hardware component, including hinges and latches, must now have a permanent marking, plate, or sticker to identify the supplier. Good news! D&D products already comply with this requirement. Our brand name is moulded into our products, guaranteeing that you're using a genuine D&D product and providing your customers with the assurance of quality and compliance.
-
Increased NATA testing requirements: The standard has increased the durability testing requirements for hinges. They now need to complete 25,000 cycles (up from 10,000) and are checked for conformance every 2500 cycles. D&D hinges are tested to far exceed the new standard. This rigorous testing approach reinforces our commitment to providing superior quality and durability you can rely on.
